Customer Review: Good lantern but questionable case
I bought this lantern because it was small and I like the bright light these lanterns throw, and the coleman hiss for nostalgic reasons. The size difference between this and the larger dual fuel one wasn’t clear to me, so I ordered that by mistake first, and returned it at small cost. I like the idea of a case to protect it, anyway.

The first time I used this one, it worked fine. It doesn’t throw a blinding light, but a fully satisfying one — good for its size, I’m not disappointed. Packing it out in the case was the problem; it worked well to the car, but back to the house the bottom fell out, the lantern dropped and broke both the glass and the mantels. I think the sides of the plastic case got compressed in the car packing and that’s all it takes to release the base. I’ll replace the parts at unknown cost and I’ll think twice before I carry it again.

This is a great compact and economical lamp. It also plenty bright enough with just one mantle to illuminate a small campsite. The mantles were available at my local Wal-Mart where I bought about 10 just in case they become harder to find later. It’s a good buy.
Customer Review: Lightweight For Purists
It is difficult to determine which lantern is actually best for your camping needs. This model uses `slip-on’ mantles and matches, meaning you have to fuss with strings, but it only weighs about one pound for backpacking. The single mantle is plenty of light for night use. For purists, this might be the best, but I purchased the “Coleman Northstar Instastart Tube-Mantle Propane Lantern”, which has two mantles and they are the `clip-on’ style, which is so much easier than tying on mantles. However, it does weigh about four pounds. For pure lightweight backpacking, I’d go with this model, but if you can stand three more pounds or are car-camping, I’d recommend the “Northstar InstaStart Tube-Mantle Lantern”, which also has metal globe guards. Either way, Coleman is the best.

Customer Review: Great Lantern
Purchased this coleman lantern for our daughter and son in law after he was called to be scoutmaster. Also for emergency use as they live in an area where weather poses a risk factor at times resulting in power outages, etc., with the added advantage of being dual fuel as in emergency situations coleman fuel is not always available. As usual the Coleman quality is there and it is reliable and works well.
Customer Review: Bright – Well built – Should come with a case
This is one of Coleman’s timeless designs. The PowerHouse model is a bit brighter and allows the use of dual fuels. The build quality has remained the same compared to my 10 year old single fuel model (still using) so I expect this to last as long. No need to worry about disposing or using up propane tanks. Good fuel capacity and long life of lantern makes this a must have for any campsite. Also great for outdoor emergency use in a power outage. Easy to find replacement mantels.

This item would have easily gotten a 5 star if not for the following,
1) This should come with a case, for ease of carrying and packing – to protect the glass.
2) Still requires a long lighter or match to ignite unlike the northstar versions with ignition (but harder to find mantels).

Customer Review: very handy
Used this lantern on a recent camping trip and it made life a little easier for my wife and I. The remote is what makes all the difference. We kept this lantern inside the tent and used the remote to light the way prior to entering.

The light output is sufficient enough to read by. There are two output settings, but I couldn’t tell the difference between the two.

We’ve only put about 8 total hours on the lantern so I can’t report on the longevity but seems to be well built and could handle some abuse. All in all, I would buy another one if needed.

Coleman 8D Square Pack-Away Lantern with Remote Control
We used this lantern following Ike when our power was out for over a week.

The only complaint we have is that it leaked a thick liquid that ruined the finish on a dining table – it ate right thru the varnish on the tabletop. We then sat it in a pan and had no more problems with it. Otherwise it was GREAT and safe.
