$6.60 to ship a 4 dollar mantle?

OK – positives – the single mantle and new northstar electric start lanterns are like having a lamp around and work great – light output is aboiut 100w or more on high, and they can be turned way down low for a night light.

The mantle leaves something to be desired. First time I “clipped” mine on everything was fine – ready to do the burnoff. Ash was fine after the burnoff. Time to light up. Light went fine until the tie clips got red hot and thats when problems started. There’s something called the coefficient of thermal expansion. Take the heat into consideration and pow, the clip undoes itself, wrecknig the mantle at the same time.

Ok – now its time to buy a new mantle. 4 buck mantle – 6.60 to ship it to me. 10.60 for a piece of ash. I think its cheaper in nevada.

My parting advice – make sure you really tie those clips on good and tight and snug before you burn the mantle the first time. Next time I find a mantle somewhere (of course nobody stocks these in the store) I’m going to take a pair of pliers and twist those little spring things so they can stay put in the groove provided in the lamp.

Maybe then my price/hr of usage will go down. It costs more for mantles now than for propane!

I know there are a lot of rechargeable lanterns out there for the same price, but nothing beats Coleman lanterns for ease or atmosphere. The glass globe is heavily protected with a metal guard (usually they sell for $5-$10 each). No matches are needed as this has an electronic ignition, which is very cool whether it’s rainy, or not. The Insta-Clip tube mantle is a neat little invention and the ventilator is made out of porcelain, so it won’t rust. The wide base is essential for sturdiness and it all fits neatly on a standard Coleman Propane Cylinder. At 4.7 pounds, this is a great backpacking light. Ten to eleven hours of light per cylinder is standard. There’s nothing like the `silent hiss’ of a Coleman lantern in the wilderness.

Customer Review: Very bright camping lantern
I bought one of these lanterns three years ago at the local discount store. I have used it numerous times on camping expeditions. It outputs very bright light at full blast. The lantern is quick to light and the best part is it does not require matches.

The only three issues I have with this lantern are:
1. Sucks the propane. I also have the coleman fuel lantern, and while it is not as bright, it can go for a week of camping on one tank (5 cups) of fuel.
2. Loud. This lantern is loud when burning. The above mentioned lantern is much quieter.
3. Construction — the fiberglass (?) base around the knob has disintegrated from my thumb rubbing it when trying to light the lantern. Hopefully this will not affect the longevity of the lantern.

I’d recommend it if you are looking for convenience and bright light, but if you are looking for value, go with the old dual mantle coleman fuel (pump up) lantern.
